Noun and Verb Podcast

Reflection

I used Podbean.com to create this podcast on nouns and verbs for my kindergarten class, while I was enrolled in the Multimedia Tools in Education course through the University of St. Francis. I chose to include this artifact in my e-portfolio for several reasons. The podcast:

    1.    demonstrates my knowledge and skill in using digital tools and new technologies

    2.    demonstrates my ability to design and develop authentic learning experiences using digital tools

    3.    demonstrates my ability to develop a technology-enriched learning environment that is age-appropriate for my students and encourages active participation.

Using Podbean.com, I was able to incorporate sound bites, music, and narration, to provide an engaging lesson on nouns and verbs for my students. I used this podcast as a quick review of the targeted parts of speech. It engaged all students, regardless of their skill level, because they were asked to collaboratively work as a small group during the podcast. They enjoyed the fast pace of the review and the timed element, which was enhanced by the music. Following the podcast and small group practice, students were asked to compile their own list of nouns and verbs within the classroom setting.

Making the podcast was fairly easy. I had some issues with the timing and insertion of the Jeopardy theme song, but several trials later it was done and I was satisfied. I had originally left this podcast as a lesson for a substitute. Among the challenges of technology lies the fact that not people are familiar and/or comfortable using technology! My substitute did not know how to play the podcast, even though I had downloaded it my computer desktop! Other challenges surrounding the creation of this form of media include:

time –initially, the creator needs to learn how to use the software,

environment –a quiet place to record the podcast without distraction and background noise,

tools and equipment - to produce and, ultimately, share the podcast the creator must have a library of sound bites and music, and decent recording and playback equipment- including microphone and speakers

I envision using podcasts occasionally in kindergarten as a means of a quick introduction to a topic or, as I did with this podcast, as a review. Uploading these podcasts to the LMS would give parents access to a window of our learning and ideas of how to reinforce concepts at home.
