Weather and Me Reflection
This science unit, titled Weather and Me, is a problem-based unit focusing on the essential question “How does weather affect your daily life?” Weather is a common, daily theme discussed in kindergarten. Designing the unit as problem-based encourages students to explore a familiar, real-life topic and its importance. The unit utilizes a variety of technology and instructional methods. The students, working in small collaborative groups, will practice communication and critical thinking skills. The final project is open-ended and allows for student creativity. It will be an avenue for students to demonstrate their knowledge of weather. Some might view this unit as simplistic, but, when dealing with five year olds whose only thought about weather is “it is hot…or…cold”, it is anything but simple!
Challenges that could arise with this unit begin with students’ prior knowledge or lack thereof. Students will need a good understanding of how to navigate the internet and use a variety of software programs and apps. Heterogeneous student groups will help with this challenge. Students who lack experience with computers/internet will be able to learn from other students. Also, students will need a good understanding of seasons; this will be helpful in their discussions involving weather throughout the year. Lack of prior knowledge in collaborative work will be a huge challenge in itself! Kindergartners need explicit teaching in how to work collaboratively as a group, make decisions, and create a final product!
Of course, like any lesson/unit utilizing technology of any kind there is the risk of the technology not working, or not working properly.
